Years ago, like 16 years ago, while in Tijuana I was drunk out of my ass and decided, while dancing, that I would go down and do a split. That is all fine and dandy since I have trained in martial arts my whole life and can easily do splits like in two chairs and stuff. Well, the problem was that I was cold and had not warned up. End result, a torn ligament on my right knee. It sucked. I would get out of the car (cause that was my job at the time and what I did required me to do that a lot) and my knee would just pop out of place. It hurt like hell and I had to squat down and mess with it until it popped back in. My knee would get swollen and man...what a pain.
So I went to Keiser Permanente. The doc said "Yup, you have a torn liggament and we need to do surgery". He also said that they had nothing available and they would call me later. 3 years went by...Yup, there is an HMO for ya, and no call. I decided to self heal. I did not kick or squat at all. Everything I did was very light and stress free. The ligament healed it self and I was able to again do my splits and currently squat more than I ever did.
I know in some severe cases surgery is needed but it should be the last alternative. Self healing with time is better and cheaper.
