Q: Can you explain the difference between a circuit class and an interval class? - P. B., Denver, CO
A: Generally, a circuit class is set up in a regular pattern of exercises that are arranged sequentially. They're usually, though not always, arranged in stations. The class may involve a variety of different segments or the same type of segments, with activities set in a regular time pattern to make a circuit.
Circuit classes move quickly from one station or segment to the next. Stations include a variety of different sculpting exercises and modalities, and may incorporate aerobic and anaerobic exercises, plyometrics, drills and machines. The goals of a circuit class are the same as for any other class: increase cardio-respiratory fitness, enhance muscular strength and endurance, build lean body mass and reduce body fat.
Interval classes are normally composed of short bouts of high-intensity work combined with longer periods of lower-intensity work. Breaking things up this way actually allows participants to complete more high-intensity work during the exercise period than they could if they were continuously maintaining a high intensity. In essence, more work is completed during the workout without increasing the time of the exercise session. The lower-intensity segments allow the body to recover sufficiently to be able to work at a higher level again. In addition, the lower-intensity work removes waste called lactic acid from the muscles. This allows the muscles to work at their optimum level.
The interval class may consist of intervals of aerobic, step, anaerobic, drills and sculpting exercises. The specific design of the class and length of work periods will depend on the goals of the class and the energy systems used. Use caution when doing high-intensity interval classes, as the injury risk increases as the intensity of the workout increases.
Interval and circuit classes may be combined with one another or with other types of classes. Both types are fun, interesting and may increase the body's adaptation to exercise, while decreasing the time it takes to meet your goals.
