06-07-2007
Q: High protein diets, low protein diets, high carbs, low carbs, low fat, high fat...I am so confused. I am a healthy 24 year old woman and I'd like to lose 5-10 pounds. What diet is best for me? - V.B., San Diego, CA
A: I'll try to take some of the confusion out of nutrition. Unless your doctor, health care provider, or registered dietician has placed you on a specific nutritional plan, this information should help you. For most people looking to improve their nutrition and health a balanced eating plan and regular exercise is the best plan to follow.
A balanced eating plan consists of about 20-30% of your calories from fat, 15-25% of your calories from protein, and about 50-60% of your calories from carbohydrates. When consuming fat be aware of the type of fat you are consuming and keep saturated and trans fats to a minimum (10% or less). Saturated fats are those in meat products, coconut oils, egg yolks, and dairy fats. Trans fats come from partially hydrogenated oils and are in many margarines and prepared foods. (Some experts believe that trans fats may be as dangerous to your health as saturated fats; however, more research is needed in this area in order to know for sure.) Choose high-quality proteins such as lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and egg whites. Most of your carbohydrate intake should come from complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, cereals, pastas, and breads. Limit sugar-laden carbohydrates to 8% or less of your total caloric intake.
Adopt a healthy eating plan that you can maintain for life. Do not jump onto the diet train, ride it for a short while, then switch to another train. This kind of dieting leads to disappointment, frustration, and eventually, weight gain. Be sure to make gradual changes that you can adopt into your healthy living plan. Eat the foods you like in moderation and watch your total caloric intake. If calories in are less than calories out, you will lose weight. Remember to balance your eating with sensible and regular exercise to accomplish your health goals.
