Question Is sweating a secret weight-loss weapon? - 06-07-2007

Is sweating a secret weight-loss weapon?

Q - One of my friends told me that she lost 5 pounds in one day. She did this by working out, in extremely hot, humid weather. She also told me that she wears sweats and doesn't drink water. I need to lose about 10 pounds. Would this be a safe and effective weight loss plan? - P.T., Omaha, NE

A - No! What your friend is doing is very dangerous. She is not losing fat, only water. She also is putting herself at risk for severe dehydration, which may lead to heat stroke and even death. Also, any weight loss she notes will be fleeting and quickly regained by eating or drinking. The loss is not permanent.

It is good that your friend is exercising, but she needs to do it responsibly and healthily. Instead of adopting her plan, take these tips: In hot weather, try to work out in the morning or evening when the sun is not so intense. Avoid wearing dark colors when working out in the sun, and choose light, breathable and comfortable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, tank tops or sports bras. And be extra careful to drink water before, during and after your workout to prevent dehydration.

Remember, the recommended amount of weight to lose within a week is one to two pounds. When done at this rate, most of the weight lost should be fat. Losing weight the safe and healthy way requires permanent lifestyle changes in diet, exercise and thinking. "Quick fixes" seldom result in success. Be smart and patient with your new lifestyle and in the end you should be successful.
