How should I breathe while bicycling? -
06-08-2007
Q: I'm wondering if there are any techniques regarding breathing and pedaling on the bike. Is there a breathing pattern relative to pedaling cadence that I should be using to ride better? For example, should I breathe in once every third pedal stroke? - C.D., Point Pleasant, NJ
A: Breathing and pedaling are not always married in cycling. Cycling uphill may slow your cadence while your breathing rate is high, and the reverse can occur when heading downhill. Even on a flat course, wind may be a factor that disrupts the relationship between the two. In general, while I'm certain that each individual has an optimal breathing rate relative to cadence, I wouldn't suggest trying to control this. Just allow your body to respond to the effort level naturally.
