How do I handle my exercise compulsion? -
06-07-2007
Q: My problem isn't finding motivation to work out, it's not knowing when to stop. I am compelled to work out every day for two to three hours, even when my body is tired and it hurts. I know that too much exercise is not good for me, but I can't stop. I absolutely have to exercise every day or I do not feel worthy as a person. What can I do? - K.C., Tampa, FL
A: This is a difficult question that goes far beyond my scope of practice and that of this site. You are aware that you are compulsive about this: It is obvious from your question that exercise is controlling your life. You admit you cannot stop exercising even when your body is trying to tell you it is tired and needs rest. Such habits are not healthy.
It's good that you realize you're in troubled territory. Now, K.C., please seek professional help in the form of a counselor, therapist, physician, or other health care provider. Look for someone who is trained in dealing with obsessive and compulsive behaviors and with whom you feel comfortable. Exercise in moderation is wonderful; however, when it is dictating your life, it can become terrifying. With the right support and help, you can defeat your problem. Best of luck to you.
