Question How can I find time to work in a workout? - 06-07-2007

Q: I work in a busy office and when I get home from work at night I am so exhausted that I do not want to even think of exercising. I know I need to, but how do I convince my body to get up and do something? - A.K., Denver, CO

A: Nothing says you have to work out after work; you can make plenty of opportunities for exercise during the busiest of days. In the morning, get up a half hour early to do some exercises. Walk or bike to work; or, if you must drive, park as far away from the building as possible, then walk the rest of the way. Use your lunch break as an opportunity to get in some activity - if you can't get to the gym, change into a pair of comfortable shoes and take a walk.

You can also adapt daily work activities into exercises throughout your day. While waiting on the copy machine or sitting at your desk, pull your abdominal muscles in tight for an ab workout. When standing, flex your knee and try to touch your heel to your glutes (your rear), which is great for your hamstrings. To give your quadriceps a workout while sitting at your desk, extend first one leg, then the other out in front of you; or cross one leg over the other and push down while extending the bottom leg. You can even do simple exercises like biceps curls, overhead presses and lateral raises at your desk if you keep a pair of dumbbells handy.

If you absolutely must save your workout for the evening, try to have a snack around 4pm to give your body some reserve energy. That way, you won't feel so exhausted. To keep your resolve, think of your workout as a time to do something nice just for you. Be a little selfish and claim some time for yourself - savor it as a reward for getting through another busy day!
