How can I breathe easier when exercising with asthma? -
06-07-2007
Q: I was recently diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma and given an inhaler to use as needed during exercise. Are there precautions I can take to avoid bringing on an asthma attack during exercise? - A. B., Sterling, SD
A: There are several steps that may help you breathe easier while you work out. Many people with this condition respond positively to a longer and very gradual warm-up. If you normally warm up for five to seven minutes, you may want to increase your warm-up time by five minutes or so. During exercise, be sure to drink plenty of water to keep your body well hydrated. In addition, monitor your intensity level closely. Often, decreasing your exercise intensity slightly may avert an exercise-induced asthma episode. If you generally work out at 75% of your maximal heart rate, you may benefit from working at 65%-70%. Your heart will still be getting a great workout and you may not have to use your inhaler. Be sure to breathe deeply during exercise; avoid shallow upper chest breathing. And listen to your body: if it is asking you to slow down slightly, do so.
Even after making these adjustments, you should always keep your inhaler close by in case you need it.
