Can I get sick from germs in the gym? -
06-08-2007
Q: I currently take an aerobics class, which I love (my instructor is great). I'd like to try weight work, but I checked out the weight room, and it was a little gross. All those people sweating on those machines had me wondering: Can I catch something if I'm not careful? - J.M., Portland, OR
A: Technically, it is possible to pick up viruses or bacteria that infect the skin from surfaces touched by the sweat or skin of another club member, but it's not a major risk. It is unlikely that anything more than a rash will occur (though if you have a small cut or existing skin irritation, the risk for infection increases). You also could conceivably catch bacteria and viruses by touching another's sweat and then touching your nose or eyes. But your overall risk of getting sick from working out on weight machines is probably no greater than holding on to the escalator railing at the shopping mall or airport.
Even with the risk of contagion aside, it is gross to follow people perniciously perspiring and not cleaning up their sweat, so I understand that you want to make sure your workout area is kept clean. Since you get along well with your aerobics instructor, ask straight out about your facility's hygiene policies. He or she can direct you to the proper person to answer your questions. Most clubs keep a daily maintenance journal on its equipment to document conditions for warranty and liability requirements; this journal should include the cleaning schedule. Some clubs have cleaning stations placed strategically in the weight area. These stations are usually equipped with some sort of cleaning solution such as Isoquin, or another anti-bacterial solution, that you may be able to use before you get on the machine. And while many clubs will provide you with a hand towel you can use to wipe visible sweat off machines, both before and after you use them, I prefer to bring one from home. It is as much a part of my workout gear as gloves or shoes (and I can use my favorite laundry softener for that spring fresh smell).
If the club is not interested in supplying you with the proper tools, ask if you can use something of your own. There are a variety of cleaners on the market that will kill both bacteria and viruses. However, a good facility should readily accommodate your concerns in some manner. You should always be a happy, healthy customer.
