Question Supplements are CONFUSING! - 04-02-2007

So I understand after years of Mom telling me I need this and I need that when it comes to vitamins and minerals that I am in need of them... but when does it end? As far as she's concerned any vitamin on the shelf is needed, but from my understanding of what I've read, if you're eating a healthy diet you really don't need ALL of that stuff... so what is necessary?

Currently Mom has me taking:
Omega 3-6-9 pills (I eat the omega 3-6-9 eggs though?!)
A mega garlic pill because I hate garlic (makes sense I suppose?)
Vitamin D (I usually always tan moderately through the winter but being on Acutane I wasn't able to)
D.L Duo-Dophilus (I eat yogurt eeeevery day- my kittens like it too!) Glucosamine&MSM (my horse takes it too!)
Greens+ drinks (understandably, but I'm usually good for eating brocoli, peas, green beans and various type of lettuce on sandwhichs and the occasional baby spinach leaves)
and to top it all off-
GNC Woman's Ultra-Mega multivitamin and mineral with a whole list of things.

What do I really need?

Welcome to our forum LM24!

I am very sorry for the delay with the answer.

You are right when you say:

The diet and natural food is the most important source of vitamins and minerals.

The point is that its very hard to get the amount of necessary vitamins and minerals only from food.
That is why we use different supplements. And I think it is good to use them but only as additional sources which will complete the needed daily dosage of vitamins and not as the main and only source of them.

Let's see your list:

Quote:
Omega 3-6-9 pills
Very good supplement.
The Omega-3's, Alpha Linolenic Acid, EPA and DHA, and the Omega-6, GLA, are necessary for the maintenance of cardiovascular, nervous system and skin health. Oleic Acid, an Omega-9, has also been shown to promote a healthy vascular system. Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. FDA evaluated the data and determined that, although there is scientific evidence supporting the claim, the evidence is not conclusive . As a dietary supplement, take 2 softgels 1 to 3 times daily with meals.

Garlic is ok. But if you do not like it you may just eat it ( I mean natural garlic) once per week.

Vitamin D
Good supplement!
Vitamin D is produced in skin exposed to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B radiation.

Vitamin D plays an important role in the maintenance of several organ systems.

Vitamin D regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines, and by promoting re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys.
It promotes bone formation and mineralization and is essential in the development of an intact and strong skeleton.
It inhibits parathyroid hormone secretion from the parathyroid gland.
Vitamin D affects the immune system by promoting immunosuppression, phagocytosis, and anti-tumor activity.

The exact long-term safe dose of vitamin D is not entirely known, but dosages up to 60 micrograms (2,400 IU)/day in healthy adults are believed to be safe.

Quote:
D.L Duo-Dophilus
Adults take 1 or more capsules daily or as directed by physician.

Glucosamine&MSM
Glucosamine is good, but do you have any problems with joints, tendons? What is your age?

Quote:
GNC Woman's Ultra-Mega multivitamin and mineral with a whole list of things.
Also a good product.

Now saying all this I want to mention the most important thing:

When taking supplements you have to consider:

1. Your age
2. The amount of vitamins/minerals you get from natural food
3. Your additional activities

All these have to be taken into consideration in order to avoid overdosing and getting the converse effect.
