Why do I need a physical? -
06-09-2007
Q: I've read in the fitness magazines that before you begin an exercise program you should get a physical from your doctor. I'm a 29-year-old healthy female lawyer who just started working out after a four-year layoff. Do you think I need to get a physical before I begin any strength training? - K.N., Portland, ME
A: Before hoisting a weight after a long layoff, it certainly is a good idea to get expert help. Start with a visit to your doctor, particularly if you're overweight or have any particular health problems. Once you get the medical OK, search out a training expert with help from your exercise facility. A good trainer will help you define your fitness goals, and if you happen to have a medical problem that limits your workout, the trainer will be able to help design a program within your abilities. In the best of cases, the trainer could act as a liaison with your physician and keep him or her abreast of your progress.
