How often should I lift? -
06-08-2007
Q: I'm a 28-year-old nurse and I'm new to weight training. I love the routines and how they make me feel and look. I'm just not sure how often I should lift. Can you help? - W.T., Tacoma, WA
A: Here's my rule of thumb: Three workouts a week, 45 to 75 minutes per session, with a rest day following each workout. It's the same for running and cycling; you get the best results when you apply stress in a hard day/easy day routine. This allows for cellular changes to occur on the rest days in which the muscle will recover from stress and automatically rebuild to be stronger. Thus, workouts are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
