Do weight gain products work? -
06-09-2007
Q: I am a novice at weight training. I am a 28-year old, 5'5" female and weigh 106 pounds. Since I have a high metabolism, I can't seem to put on any weight. How can I gain? Will a weight-gaining product help? - A.G., Augusta, GA
A: A weight-gaining product can certainly help you put on weight. These powdered products are simply another source of food, typically containing protein, carbohydrates and some fats. While weight-gaining products offer added convenience (just scoop, mix and drink), you can get the same results from a well-balanced diet.
Since you have a high metabolic rate, it's best to maintain a high-caloric intake each day, which means consistently consuming three larger-than-normal meals every day in a 30/40/30 ratio of carbohydrate, protein and fat, plus two or three snacks (morning, afternoon, evening). As a body builder, you should have a higher than normal protein intake.
In theory, you can put on at least a pound a week by taking in an additional 500 calories a day. To take in those extra calories in a way that's as easy as downing those drinkable weight gain supplements, look for ways to add calories to the liquids you're already ingesting. If you start your day with cereal, be sure you prepare the hot varieties with milk instead of water. If you eat cold cereal, you can even give the 1 or 2 percent milk you pour over it an extra calorie kick by adding a quarter cup of powdered milk to it. Choose the right juices as well: Grape, pineapple or cranberry juice has more calories than orange or grapefruit juice. And don't just start your day with extra calories, end it with a boost, too: Before turning in, have an extra snack such as a peanut butter sandwich with a glass of milk.
