Which comes first, diet or exercise?

Q: I'm a 30-year old mother of three and want to lose about 25 pounds in the next few months. Should I go on a diet and lose weight before I begin a strength-training program? - J.L., Miami, FL


A: Absolutely not. You should do both at the same time. Slightly reduce the number of calories you consume daily while training three or more times a week with weights. You'll be very happy with the results. Think of your muscles as the body's engine. And if your engine is more powerful, you'll burn more calories. Exercise, such as resistance training, produces an increase in basal metabolic rate (the speed at which food is used). This enables food to be utilized more effectively. Persons who regularly work out with weights often find themselves eating more and weighing less. Others find their weight does not change but their muscle to fat ratio is altered favorably.
