depends how long long you been training etc. if you are training whilst on steroids you can afford to hit it harder, for longer and a little more frequently, i prefer to train in the 4-10 rep range but will include singles and high reps now and again either as a measure of testing my 1RM or if im going for a pump at the end of my workout, all rep ranges are of benefit to bodybuilders seeking complete muscle development, this again is applied to sets,
i prefer to include more sets if im training heavier for strength, the additional volume will actually help me gain....just google the 5x5 method, alternatively high reps for 3-4 sets is normally more than sufficient for most, remember the more volume, the more recovery time that is required between workouts, so if you want to train a muscle group once a week, then the high volume approach is best in most instances, and vice versa, if you are training to improve technique or neural strength, training frequency becomes more important....just google powerlifting and olympic style lifting routines....
so ultimatly there is no " one size fits all " training approach, only principles we should all try and stick too, so its trial and error bro, keep a journal and revise what works best for you, so long as you abide by certain principles and are getting stronger, you will make progress, whether its quick or not is down to you....
Hope this helps
