How can I motivate myself after taking a break? -
06-08-2007
Q: I was into a three-time-per-week weight-training regimen at my gym for 15 months and made some gains I was happy with. But it got to be hard, and I stopped lifting for over two months. I'd like to start up again, but I'm put off at the prospect of starting from scratch. How can I motivate myself to start over? - G.O., Augusta, GA
A: Don't let past lapses stand in your way of resuming workouts. You can always start over. Remember the well-worn phrase, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life"? It's true. If you do quit, or if you have quit, today is a great time to get started again.
Look at it this way: You've had a little rest and now you can start fresh. Too many people get so psyched up about being regular with their workouts that if they stop, even for a short time, they think all is lost. They perceive that they've failed, so they might as well quit for good.
I don't think that way and neither should you. Life is a series of ups and downs, starts and stops, mountains and valleys. No matter how many times you quit, you can always start again.
