How can I get a V-shaped torso? -
06-08-2007
Q: I'm jealous when I see those muscular v-shaped torsos that all male gymnasts seem to have. What can I do, besides becoming a gymnast, to get such back musculature? - C.B., Traverse City, MI
A: I would recommend a regimen of pull-ups and chin-ups. A pull-up is performed with your palms facing away from you, while a chin-up is performed with your palms facing towards you. When you are able to perform 12 chin-ups with your hands shoulder-width apart, you are ready for this back-blasting program:
* Wide-grip pull-ups: Perform as many as you can with your hands set slightly farther than shoulder-width on the bar.
* 10 second rest
* Medium-grip pull-up: Perform as many as you can with your hands set slightly less than shoulder width apart on the bar.
* Rest 10 seconds
* Medium-grip chin-up: Perform as many as you can.
* Narrow-grip chin-ups: Perform as many as you can with your hands almost next to each other on the bar.
* Rest for five minutes, then repeat the sequence.
