Can I be my weightlifting best within a year? -
06-09-2007
Q: I am a 24-year-old male with a slight frame who weighs 150 pounds. I started lifting seriously in my gym less than two months ago. I'd really like to be as good as I can get, even better than my friends who've been lifting for years. To tell the truth, I'd love to be a Schwarzenegger. What goals should I set for myself over the next year? - B.G., Omaha, NE
A: To be the best in any sport is usually expecting too much. To improve yourself is a much more realistic goal, and one we can all accomplish.
I have found that success is the best motivator. Your goals should be personal. Don't try to achieve what your friends are striving for. Go for what you really want, and enjoy each gain that you notice along the way. Be patient. You will not reach your full potential in a week, a month or even a year. Remember, all self-improvement is an ongoing process.
There is nothing wrong with dreaming, but be sure your goals are reachable. Always chasing rainbows will leave you with disappointment. A 150-pounder such as you will not be benchpressing 450 pounds. But by tailoring your expectations to your own abilities, not to the abilities of others (whether they're personal friends or superstars), you can remain happy with your personal achievements and inspired to continue in your workouts.
