Feast for the Beast at Bodybuilding Championships
By David Pascal
A Short Man and Robo Cop were the latest casualties in the wake of the Colossal Beast’s continued impressive reign on the national bodybuilding stage. On Sunday evening at the National Cultural Centre, Rolandson "The Beast" Auguste captured the overall title at the Courts Powerhouse Bodybuilding Championships.
Auguste, out-muscled six other competitors to win the Men’s Champions of Champions showdown. Lawrence "Robo Cop" Stephens placed second while Alphonsus "Short Man" Joseph came in third. Auguste was also up against Winston Richardson (Novice Class winner), William Lamontagne (Intermediate champ), St George Prospere and Orville James.
A notable absentee was St Lucia’s Man of Steel, Julian Felix, who showed his human side. The flu and not kryptonite had struck him down. In the dressing room afterwards, Auguste wiped the sweat off his brow after completing what seemed like just another day at the office. The supremely confident bodybuilder said: "I expected something good tonight and I came to deliver in order to get something good in return."
He was disappointed main rival Julian Felix was a no show, but expressed doubt that the outcome would have been different. "Whether he was there or not, I would still do what I had to do to win. I am very, very confident," said Auguste. He pocketed a cool $3,000 for the victory while Stephens took home $2,500 and Joseph $1,500.
In winning the Novice Class, Richardson with a physique manufactured at Body Inc, displayed a lean but muscular body to out-point his three other competitors. In the Intermediate Class, William Lamontagne (Body Inc) was the clear-cut winner among the four competitors. Velda John of Vel’s Gym won the Women’s Open Body Fitness competition with gym partner Amanda Eugene second. They look good, but need to incorporate a fitness display into their routine to spice things up.
John moved on to compete in the Women’s Female Open competition against Monica Dudley and Magdalene Felix. Dudley made her first appearance after a prolonged absence. Didn’t matter! She’s still St Lucia’s best female bodybuilder. She won this class easily over John who is shapely, but much too lean for this segment of the show. Felix, who placed third, should be applauded for her effort.
Guest poser was 2007 CAC Overalll Winner, Vonne Francis, of Grenada. He recently turned pro and big things are expected from him. Last year Francis won a very controversial decision at the Caribbean Championships while competing against Rolandson "The Beast" Auguste. But this night belonged to Auguste who devoured opponents. But then again, that’s the nature of the Beast.
