Can I use my weight lifting to help my golf play? -
06-09-2007
Q: I recently took up golf and find it to be quite enjoyable. I've lifted weights for more than a year now, and I'm wondering if there's anything I should be doing in the gym that may help my golf game. - C.M., Oxford, OH

A: Many pro golfers now use weight training to increase strength, flexibility and muscular endurance. A good weight program can develop balance for golfers with weak leg muscles, for example. Getting stronger and more flexible also enhances techniques by allowing a golfer to assume a better biomechanical position out on the links. I would recommend that you perform exercises that will strengthen your hands (barbell wrist curls), forearms (arms extended wrist-roller wrist curls), trunk rotators (seated barbell twist) and back (wide-grip lat pull-down). And don't forget leg presses for enhancing leg strength.
Strength in golf is of little use without flexibility. I've found that many men need more flexibility than strength work, while the opposite is generally true for women. Put in 10 minutes a day stretching and you'll lay a good flexibility foundation. A good all-around stretch for you to try is the yoga exercise called the sun salutation, a series of 12 distinct stretches that will work your entire body.
